So, if you know how to install FreeBSD and NTP, you can save 600 Bucks
here :-)
Kind regards,
Heiko
Indeed - I did exactly that! Although I didn't know either how to install
FreeBSD not how to run PPS NTP on FreeBSD, so I looked it up and with the
help of others found out how. I wrote it up here:
http://www.david-taylor.myby.co.uk/ntp/FreeBSD-GPS-PPS.htm
Having done that:
- I would now prefer a solution that was based on a single-card computer
rather than one with moving parts and a PC power supply, so in principle I
do like the idea of a box with a power lead, a GPS antenna connection, and
a network port.
- I would even have preferred to get one of the excellent Meinberg cards
to go into one of my existing Windows PCs, but as the price was not
specified on the Web site, I assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that it would
cost more than I could afford. In addition, I did not want a complex
outside antenna, just the ability to accept an amplified antenna such as
those available for the Garmin hand-held GPS devices.

I find that these antennas give adequate reception in my top-floor
location.
Cheers,
David
