One more remark about that fuse in the USB line:

I usually work with used equipment, but if you have a valuable 
motherboard you may not feel comfortable using its USB port to power 
outdoor rooftop devices (think of static discharge). I guess that weird 
fuse idea must have come from that (but fuses won't work as static 
protection either).

You could use a cheap self powered USB hub as a power source. Those 
things with their own wall-wart I mean. With no USB attached, they are 
still a cheap 5 volt supply, and you were planning the USB plug anyway.

They come as cheap as 10 or 20 euro; blowing that is better than blowing 
a mobo...
