FFmpeg's configure, together with its ancestor MPlayer's configure are what i think is the best currently existing configuration system available. Of course, it's not perfect, of course it could be improved. For one thing, FFmpeg was started by Fabrice Bellard years ago. For another thing, the hand written configure aproach is IMHO much better than auto* both in terms of maintainability and portability.
