Have a look at it. FFmpeg's configure, together with its ancestor
MPlayer's configure are what i think is the best currently existing
configuration system available. Of course, it's not perfect, of course
it could be improved. But it is higly portable (FFmpeg and MPlayer run
on more plattforms than netbsd and linux together), easy to to extend
and debug, and last but not least, it just works.

For one thing, FFmpeg was started by Fabrice Bellard years ago.
For another thing, the hand written configure aproach is IMHO 
much better than auto* both in terms of maintainability and
portability.
