Thanks for the comments. Yes if there was a way of using stock.lot in an order line instead of stock.move, then that would do it. Is there? Same with a picking.
Re multiple modules, yes that's a good idea. Purchase, stock and mrp really just have patches to understand the grouping, the main work is in the purchase merge wizard. I don't believe I have created additional dependencies, but would need to have another careful look to be sure. The documentation is so limited that it doesn't even describe how it currently works let alone the best way to change it. That's why I asked on the forum.
