If you have a long project analysis to do, you may want to wait for 5.0 since you will be busy addressing non-technical issues anyway.
But if it's going to be a short project, or if you want to go in production early in the process, then deploy 4.2, and plan for migration next year. Planet OpenERP is still full of new features. That's cool, but I'm not aware of a code freeze taking place, not even feature freeze, not to mention string freeze for translations to be possible. 5.0 will only be released later, and then it will take time to mature. I wouldn't use it in production before it has.
