First, let me rant that we have to answer the same question in so many 
different threads :x

In the process of developing 5.2, back in winter 2009, we decided to "break 
some eggs" and introduce a few important patches to the 5.0 series.
Then, with the help of the community, an avalanche of patches/requests/features 
came against the existing codebase. 5.2 would clearly receive a lot of changes.
Add the need for usability redesign on top of that, and it was apparent that 
we[1] were going for a big thing, a major release..

A piece of software (like OpenERP, please count the lines of code) is not a 
cake, that you put in the oven and let it bake for 35min. You try to follow a 
schedule, make some planning, but at the end it gets released *only* when you 
are confident that it's ready, it has reached the level of quality and 
stability you have set for.

That's why v6 is still being worked on.
