The data sheet is a place to start. But that tends to only consider the MCU, and not all the other peripherals. For example, the leakage currents on a Telos cause it to have a minimum draw of about 7uA, while on a micaZ it's around 2uA. But the telos has a lower active current etc. For rough estimates, the datasheet is fine.

The PowerTOSSIM paper from SenSys 2004 has some numbers.
