Michael:
They have a "sense of the future" the same way Pavlov's dogs could
"anticipate the future" by salivating in anticipation of the food. There are
many mechanisms that allow aniamls to deal with events before they happen. In
the case of squirrels, the mechanism is an evolutinary adaptation, while
Pavlov's is a learned adaptation (though the potential for learning is itself
an adaptation). I would have asked to student to clarify what they meant by
"sense" of the future, because this word is very fuzzy. JK
