I would normally attempt not to waste bandwidth on a "me too"-style post, but I want to voice the strongest possible agreement with the following statements from Edward Pollak about teaching biopsych:
> I make no bones about "pandering to the masses." When I discuss > neurochemistry I take every opportunity to discuss the mechanism of action > of psychotherapeutic drugs and I hasten to point out the relevance of these > actions for the various theories of etiology. When I discuss neuroanatomy I > take every opportunity to make it functional neuroanatomy and to throw in as > many "gee whiz" examples as possible...... [...] > The bottom line is that physiological psych requires a great deal of > memorization. The concepts aren't all that tough after you get through > action potentials, synaptic transmission & negative feedback loops. So I > view a lot of my job as one of motivating them to do the necessary > memorization. You've all heard of the "teacher/scholar" model? Well, in > the classroom I subscribe to the "teacher/entertainer" model!
