Fair comment. I had not been thinking of my participation on this listserv as "making public comments." Perhaps that is part of my error. I have become so comfortable thinking of these exchanges as private discussions I haven't thought to suppress/revise the tag as I do in other public forums. Okay, since we tend to disagree on things, but I find your opinion quite valuable (and I mean that), I'm interesting in discussing this further. Others may feel inclined to join in... Are you more concerned about my use of religious material in the signature tag, or my religious comments on the listserv that unintentionally associate the university with those comments? Or are both equally problematic? Would you advise me to: 1) remove religious material from the signature tag 2) remove my institutional and professional affiliations from the signature tag 3) remove myself from the listserv Here's something else...if we're not just talking about removing religious material from signature tags, but we're really talking about making public comments on a professional listserv THEN could any statement that anyone makes on this list that promotes a particular belief -- religious, political, or otherwise, or attacks one, arguably be construed as that person representing his/her instititution? Should all instit. affiliations be removed? Perhaps this is a question for the list moderator? > > Frankly, I found your comments about women the other day to be very offensive, and >not > > what would be expected from someone holding these positions. I can understand you taking offense. I can only try to explain the belief, and minimize the potential offense. For the record, as the father of two little girls, I do not take the issue of women in Christianity lightly, and will continue to re-examine my beliefs. I am equally concerned about not offending others but also not adhering to religious belief simply because they offend others. And my comments about the roles of men and women in the church are specific to the church, not to our culture. So I don't see many links between my personal views and my professional obligations, especially not in this case. Thanks for making yourself clear. I hope I have done the same.
