(My nichols worth, though some may think it is worth considerably less than two cents.)
I see no need to change, delete, or unsubscribe. I would not assume that anyone is posting as a representative of their institution or organization unless that say they are. Short of a statement to the effect "As president of American Psychologists In Favor of All Things Good, I feel compelled to point out to you that ....", I would not take the expression of any viewpoints, especially controversial viewpoints, as being representative of the organization. Absent such a statement, the fact that the .sig file includes "President, American Psychologists In Favor of All Things Good", would carry no weight as far as I am concerned. Unless, of course, the posting addressed advocacy of some "good thing". Even then, I have been a member of enough organizations to know that even the president does not necessarily represent the views of everyone in the organization. I certainly hope no one takes anything I say as representing the position of Tulsa Community College, or of other faculty at TCC, whether they agree with my position or not. I take Michael Sylvester's statements as representing his position(s), whether I agree with him (I occasionally do) or not. I have never assumed that they represent any institution which may or may not be located in or near Daytona Beach, Florida. I will leave my .sig file as is, and would hope that everyone else will do the same. Certainly, each should do what they feel comfortable doing, but if anything, I would encourage all who do not already include it to add their institutional affiliation. Unless it is patently offensive, I see no reason for someone to not display any quote, or tag line, they wish to show. If is expressive of some guiding principle in their life (even religious), it is fine with me -- even if I do not hold that religious belief. "All sinners will burn in Hell for all eternity!!" might be a bit much -- and I find it hard to believe -- but I realize that many people do believe exactly that way. On a religious list it might be OK, but on a list such as TIPS, I find it hard to believe that more than a few subscribers would grant much credence or credibility to anyone insensitive, provocative, belligerent or dumb (take your pick) enough to think that would be an appropriate tag line. Finally, even if I never found a statement I could agree with in a particular TIPSter's postings, I would be loath to seriously suggest unsubscribing. I would prefer the "agree to disagree" approach. (Though there was, some years back, a particularly provocative person that, as I recall, Bill had to block. I do not recall shedding any tears, myself, and I do not recall anyone else complaining when that person's posts quit appearing.)
