        From my perspective, Jim, it would look like an either/or
situation. In order to keep from involving your institution in your
statements, you need to either:

        1. Remove the religious material from your posts if you are
posting AS a professional (i.e., discussing teaching strategies, etc.);
or

        2. Remove the institutional and professional affiliations when
you are posting your PERSONAL views on controversial topics (i.e.,
abortion, creationism, politics, etc.).

        You'll note, btw, that I follow my own advice. My messages to
the list dealing with academic topics usually have my institutional
association as a part of the .sig, but those dealing with controversial
topics have only the (reasonably non-controversial) tag line and my
name. In addition, ALL my posts originate from my personal computer
system (using my private email address, not my institutional one), and
thus don't involve my institution directly at all.

        That's just one perspective, of course, but one that should keep
anyone clear of any problems with their employers.

        Rick
