>Do the statistics cited on children killed by parents distinguish
>between biological parents and step-parents?

I only have one reference handy, a Kenrick and Trost chapter on
evolutionary perspectives of human relationships, which cites two
Daly and Wilson papers to support the statement: "Children living
with a step- or foster-parent in two samples were 70 to 100 times
more likely to be fatally abused than children living with both
natural parents."

The papers cited:

Daly, M., & Wilson, M.I. (1988). Evolutionary social psychology and
family homicide. Science, 242, 519-524.

Daly, M., & Wilson, M.I. (1994). Some differential attributes of
lethal assaults on small children by stepfathers versus genetic
fathers. Ethology and Sociobiology, 15, 207-217.

Some comments on the numbers of abuse in general:

>debating numbers lets us forget each number is a real child.

I don't think so at all. We're scientists, but no less caring because of that.

But what if there's a lot LESS abuse going on than we think? I can
live with that... I hope it's true.
