TIPS Colleagues,

I would appreciate your ideas about the following proposal.

We are planning on implementing a 1/4 credit "research group" course
that would systematize student collaboration with faculty on research
and give faculty credit for doing research with students.

We imagine faculty maintaining research groups of 5-7 student each
semester who are working with that faculty member in her or his
research program. Faculty would receive one course credit every
third year they maintained a research group.

The students would begin as sophomores and could take the research
group course every semester through their senior year, somewhat like
lessons for an instrument (e.g. bassoon, violin, voice). They might
stay with one faculty member and research program for their career or
they might move among several.

We want to establish a shared syllabus for this approach that talks
about the skills and concepts that students will learn as they
progress in proficiency in doing research in psychology. This will
help us know what to concentrate on when working with students at
different levels and facilitate the ability of students to switch
from one research group to another.

1) Anyone have a similar program?
2) Any ideas of ways to get lists of skills/concepts that will help us
      design the syllabus?

Any comments/references, etc would be appreciated.
