There is a common misperception by the public (and some academics) about what tenure means. Tenure means that you no longer have to go through the annual scrutiny that new faculty are submitted to during their probationary periods. It does not mean that you can't be fired. I have seen several tenured profs fired in the last 20 years for things like seriously sexually harassing students, dealing drugs to students, having drug problems that they refuse to deal with, etc.
