I teach stats as part of an intro course. In the course evaluations last semester, when answering a question about the usefulness of the course info in their lives, comments included that because of the class - they are more critical readers of surveys in their magazines, e.g.they consider the way a sample was drawn, its size and representativeness (part of inferential statistics) -they check what kind of average is being reported (mean, median, or mode.) -they check out the statistics reported in the magazine ads, considering how the stats were obtained or whether even whether any info is reported in the ad about this. Yes, these all relate to critical thinking skills, but the research and stat info is very relevant in helping them develop these skills. Riki Koenigsberg, PhD
