Regarding Deb Briihl's questions
1. How many of you use an essential (briefer, etc.) book? What are the advantages/disadvantages to using one? I rely on the text for most of the details in the course. The essential edition would probably be useful IF major chapters are deleted (e.g., chapters I particularly value. Another issue is the tendency for essential versions to be paperback. On a commuter campus these tend to fall apart before the semester ends. 2. How many of you take into consideration cost of the textbook? I am concerned about the cost, but I have never based an adoption on a cost comparison basis. Currently, publishers have deals in which the cost of the book is reduced if they can shrink wrap some of the supplemental materials with the text. If we require these supplemental materials (e.g., CDs), students will need to buy new texts to get them. 3. Do you have separate classes for majors and non-majors of psychology? If you do, do you use different books? Our large sections include many non-majors, but we do offer occasional Honors sections which draw mostly majors. Each faculty member can choose their own preferred text, but it isn't a majors vs non-majors issue, except perhaps in the Honors sections.
