Thanks to all of you for supporting my gut reaction. Annette, sorry for sending this to you twice
The real complication is that the best student I have ever had, and likely to ever have is graduating this year. He has been my "project" ever since he transferred to Oswego 2 1/2 years ago. A boy after my own heart, graduating HS with a 71 average. When you consider he had 100's in French (his family is Haitian), and band, there is a better indication of his academic performance. Joined the army and played saxophone in the army band. Took some classes while in the army but did marginally better than HS. Came to Oswego and I advised him during transfer orientation and quickly realized his potential. He worked in my lab where we really collaborated on a few project. At the start of his junior year we accepted him into the department honors program. He's graduating with a 3.95 (taking very difficult electives), over 1500 in the GRE's, received our department award for research and the SUNY chancellor's award. He is off to the cognitive science program at the University of Rochester with a $20,000 a year fellowship. To top it off, as good as he has been in psychology, he's a better saxophone player. I told him that if I could play as well as he can I would have left school and become a professional jazz musician. And to really top it off, he is the nicest person. Last summer he volunteered at a head start reading program. I suspect my son will be playing soccer for another 8 years (he's 14), and in many more championship games, not to mention basketball and track. But if they win this game, they are the decided underdogs, I wouldn't want to miss it. Thanks for the advise Gary J.
