Why the presumption of an "optimism for the universe"? If the universe is 
mechanistic, there is no such thing as optimism. What is simply is. Nor are 
tragedies so devastating. When a loved one dies unexpectedly, it is a 
individual loss. For those who believe in a loving God there is the extra 
burden of asking why a loving God would permit such a thing to happen. I 
know the theological arguments backward and forward, I personally am not 
asking this question. My point is that Believing in a lvoing God only adds 
to burden.
