I am very fortunate to teach experimental psychology at an institution
that recognizes the importance of this area and requires a year long
course in experimental psychology. The first semester is largely
dedicated to teaching students scientific thinking. One text that they
read is Stanovich's "How to think straight about psychology." This text
does a good job at generating a lot of discussion and challenging the
students to question their long held beliefs about human behavior.

Many of our students will not go on to graduate school. In light of
this, I try to stress that regardless of your career path, you should be
able to read something in the news or in a journal and not just simply
accept the conclusions of the authors. Instead, the students should be
able to recognize flaws in scientific research as well as understand
that converging evidence is critical to our understanding of complex
behavior.
