Hi All,
I really wanted to stay out of this one, but it
seems I'm missing a piece of information, and I would
really like to find it.
Can someone tell me why there are so many harsh
comments regarding the original question?
Here is the original message:
Sylvestm wrote:
I have a Hungarian Jewish student in my class who has
a child in
kindergarten. She remarked that she was surprised that
Jewish
kindergarten
school her child attends also admits christian
children.She apparently
feels that this is wrong.
As the unchallenged cross-cultural dude on Tips,my
question pertains to
how common is this attitude among recent jewish
immigrants to this
country.
Back to me:
Now, where is the discrimination in this question?
What is wrong with it? Or were there previous comments
that Sylvestm made part of the inflamed reactions of
Nancy Melucci, Hank Goldstein and Linda Wolf?
I would appreciate clarification. Up to this day, I
really enjoyed the camaraderie of this list, and the
overall dynamics of liberal discussions. And yet,
today it seems as if asking questions relating to
cultures are not proper?
Let me throw in one question that might bring me the
wrath of sensitive people (I think I can take it!)
I live in the Yukon, and we are having territorial
elections next month. One of the parties' candidates
was at the College answering our questions. I asked
what he thought of the use of Circle Sentencing as an
alternative justice method, in the light that very
little research has been done regarding it's outcomes
and efficacy. As a matter of fact, I was recently
reviewing a colleague's Ph.D.'s thesis on that topic,
and the results showed no support at all for the
method of circle sentencing in terms of recidivism.
When I brought that up, the candidate replied that
non-first nation People cannot possibly measure native
issues with our methods of doing research, and we have
no idea of what a circle really is and what happens in
one.
So I was left thinking about this. Any food for
thought on the issue anyone?
PS: It's ok if you want to throw the wrath of Hell my
way if I offended you in any way. If it makes you feel
better to do that, then I will have been useful today.
Cheers everyone! I hope to get some discussion going
on this one!
