I first encountered the quotation in David Grilly's book _Drugs and
Human Behavior_; according to Grilly, William James composed the verse
while high on nitrous oxide (not ether).

Another nitrous quotation attributed to William James (by Alexander
Shulgin, in his book _PIHKAL_) is:

"There are no differences but differences of degree
         between different degrees of difference
                   and no difference."

But neither Grilly nor Shulgin gives a precise source.
