James, William (1882). Subjective effect of nitrous oxide. Mind, 7, 
pages unknown.

This article contains the difference quote, but not the higamous 
quote.

His book The Varieties of Religious Experience (reprint, 1958, p. 
298) refers to his experience where NO2 revealed to him other 
forms of consciousness parted only by the filmiest of screens, but 
no higamous.

Adam Smith's (1975) Powers of Mond, p. 31, says that William 
James wreote down the higamous quote, but no source is given.
