Well, Michael, And the source of these statistics is?
I need more evidence and also alternative explanations. Perhaps subscriptions are declining because of a ceiling effect? The same old same old gets recycled, and this is true on all lists that have longevity because new members are not aware of old discussions. Many of the previous responses are reformulated for the new members' benefit, by the older members who see this as a polite service. It is so much nicer than "go check the archives and don't bother us". "important classroom issues" Please operationally define. I don't see these declining at all. In fact, in going out on a limb in response to the romantic attachment styles post, I have seen a few really great, helpful posts in the last two days. Yeah! I can better teach that part of intro now. How can we possibly know anyone's ethnicity from this list? And, is that important. For example, how would anyone know that my maiden name is Kujawski. Now how Polish is that? Would anyone guess that from my married name, Taylor? English is my second language. I was raised by post WWII immigrants who probably infused my generation of first generation Polish-Americans with a MUCH stronger cultural background than my birth cohort growing up in Poland! But that never comes through in tips. And it shouldn't! But it does make me eurocentric in upbringing, I guess. But let's face it, Annette Taylor. Sounds like I could be African American. Or Welsh. Or South African? Australian perhaps? And, like the Pope, I was raised Catholic, but if we go with Taylor for a moment here, well, I could be Protestant. But maybe I changed my religious orientation--actually, I was a devout Bahia for a long time before becoming a devout non-organized religiously affiliated person. So what's with the ethnicity count? Who's the Cuban? Has any one kept stats on the number of posts from international tipsters? I think they are on the upswing, especially from Canada and England. But I could be wrong, I haven't been keeping a count. Well, to get to my point, the reason you leave yourself open for ad hominem attacks is that you make grand sweeping statements without evidence to back them up. Some of the statements themselves suggest a parallel disregard of others as you suggest others demonstrate. Unfortunately, that means that people even nit pick over typos. (Gee, I typed ad hominen the first time and had to go back and fix it so no one would nit pick over my typos.) Now, what did all of this have to do with improving classroom instruction? How did I get pulled into this? Oh yeah, I still haven't finished those 40 APA lab reports...anything to get out of grading I guess.
