Paul, help me--really. Off-list. I still haven't figured out that cosmic
danger Michael poses that some people should respond with such outrage.
Gosh, is it too much to ask for some respectful collegiality? Just
because someone chooses to decide that Michael is an irritant doesn't give
him or her the right to go out of his or her way to be disrespectful,
ill-tempered, and ill-mannered. What purpose does it serve except shed
light on the barb thrower?
It's almost as if his queries are verbal Roschach tests. Sometimes I
think they're deliberately so and Michael is doing a study on the
behavioral responses of members on this list to "gnatty" questions.
Take this fellow Ray Rogoway. Why the vitriolic attitude? What could we
say about him in something of a less than laudatory way if we wished:
unpublished, teaching in a high school, a "mere" adjunct at a near-by
college, not having a Ph.D., a theatrical lighting designer.
Michael is probably an adjunct at Daytona Beach Community College. He's
not listed as permanent faculty, but he does have an extension telephone
number in the Department of Behavioral Sciences. Maybe someone ought to
give him a call and talk with him--and see if he exists.
