I don't think that's the
issue, Louis. More to the issue is the fact that, unlike a Usenet post, when we
post to a subscription mailing list, we have reasonable expectations that our
posts will be confidential TO that list. Certainly, we're not posting with
something to hide--but on the other hand, I've seen list members express
comments about the administration of their institutions, provide sample test
questions from their exams, and post other material that he or she would
probably not care to have in the hands of students.
We realize that anything
we say _could_ be accessible to a student, administrator, or other individual
who chose to access the list archives--but that's very different from the
general public being able to do a simple Google search on our names and access
all our posts here. The purpose of this list being subscription based is to
control access to some extent--if access to the content is freely available to
anyone who chooses to look us up on the Internet, that purpose is defeated and
we might just as well be posting to the Usenet or a Web Forum
instead.
One thing to consider:
Most of us post to other locations (blogs, Web Forums, etc.) and we may not feel
comfortable in some of those settings revealing our place of employment
publicly. If TIPS posts are easily accessible, however, anyone can learn where
each of us works (most of us use our academic affiliations in our signature
files here, as you know), something that could be a potential problem if our
discussions in other forums are political or otherwise controversial in nature
and someone decides to harass us at work--a very real possibility, particularly
for the women on the list.
There should be settings
for Lyris that prevent outside access to the Web forum (which is the only place
the messages could be available) to non-members. If there are, they should be
set. If there are not, then the list needs to use a listserver such as majordomo
or listserv that DOES have such listings instead.
