Oh no, not _another_ election. But if we're electioneering, perhaps
the APA members on this list won't mind if an outsider ( a non-APA
member and a Canuck no less) weighs in with another recommendation.
Remember, if Canadians could vote in that other thing that
preoccupies Americans at the moment, Kerry would win in a landslide.
I understand that Gerald Koocher is also a candidate for the exalted
position of APA president. I believe he is still editor of the
journal _Ethics & Behavior_. As it happens, some time ago I had the
occasion to interact with him concerning an ethical problem of
considerable importance to me. I found him approachable, responsive,
concerned, and effective. I was impressed. I figure if he could be
that helpful for someone like little old me, think what he could do
for the APA. In particular, I'd bet that he wouldn't be one to cave
in, as the APA ignominiously did in the famous Rind case. ("A meta-
analytic examination of assumed properties of child sexual abuse
using college samples, Psychological Bulletin, 1998, 124, 22-53").
That's exactly what it did when the U.S. Senate decided it didn't
like the politically-incorrect conclusion of this peer-reviewed study
published in a respected journal. (See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rind_et_al. for a brief overview of this
case). I think we need someone in charge of the APA who can stand up
for science. So Dr. Koocher'd get my vote if I had one.
I'm Stephen L. Black and I approve this message
(I know, I used it before, but I like it).
