Early verbal learning research showed that it took multiple lists to get the full serial position effect. On early lists, people would remember the early items better, but not the recency portion. After the first few lists, they began recalling the end items first (i.e., dumping out STM), then the items from LTM, and this produced the full serial position effect. A practice list or two ought to help get the effect, or instructions to recall the last items first (which might be seen as "cheating" a bit).
