We have a similar system that posts ID photos. It has not been up till recently, but I find it a great way to learn names for my Online classes so that when I see a student on campus I can at least give some sign of recognition.

I also use note cards that the students complete at the end of each class with their name and either a response to some item from class or an assessment question.

I hand these back at the next class period.

I find that even with my aging brain I can learn most names in about two weeks in a class of 50, partly because I get so embarrassed when I call a student by the wrong name or I cannot remember a name. (Having the cards in hand in an alphabetical pocket file also allows me to sort through and sometimes get down to just a few possibilities.)

At St. John's we have our classes' rosters (and a lot of other stuff) on-line. When we wish to consult a roster we have an option to view it with each student's ID picture. I find this feature to be a most wonderful resource, particularly with large classes where it becomes more difficult to learn all the names and faces. The only minor drawback of the current system is that I don't think that the pictures are ever updated. Given that some students can undergo significant changes from semester to semester, sometimes they are not easily recognizable with an earlier picture.

Most of my classes are too big to learn faces, but I have one that runs about 25 students, and I try to learn everyone's name. In that class I take everyone's picture after the first class, and have a contact sheet made. (This is film technology.) I not only learn their names, but I can look them up when they ask for a letter of reference years later.

Do any of you use facebook to learn more about your students?

I was considering using it next semester to try and more quickly memorize names, yet somehow I feel like I'm invading their privacy.

Any feedback would be appreciated
