Hi Carol
see
http://www.uwec.edu/sdd/chap14.htm
on our campus, Jodi Thesing Ritter (an associate dean) has promoted
discussions and policy revisions related to your concerns--there has been
much interest and movement toward a saner and more workable policy. This
website indicates a process that may be helpful to you if your own
institution lacks a similar. In general there is a big push to move away
from discussions of academic misconduct to one of promoting academic
integrity. also there was a real attempt to make the process easier although
this sort of situation is always uncomfortable.
i have other assignments on this topic if you are interested
i would start with the appropriate person on your campus. a quick search
revealed misconduct or integrity statements for different departments or
programs on your campus. to be proactive raise the issue at your center for
teaching.
regards and good luck with the process, blaine

Subject: advice on plagiarism
Dear Tipsters,
Could you all share with me what you would do in the case of a student who
basically copied her paper verbatim from several sources? In other words,
the first few sentences are directly lifted from an internet source, the
next few from a journal, a few more from other journals, and so on. I think
maybe a small handful of words are her own out of a 7-page paper. The course
is a 5-week, graduate-level, 1-credit overview of psychopharmacology for
occupational therapists. To my knowledge, I've not had this happen before
(or at least I didn't detect it), and now that my naivete has been
shattered, I wonder how the rest of you would handle it. I plan to consider
our university's stance regarding plagiarism and talk with my dean before
confronting the student, but I'm just curious about how others handle this
kind of situation. Especially since I just spent a good portion of my Sunday
morning looking up her sources (I'm extremely irritated).
Thanks,
Carol
