The symptoms look like you have experienced a "browser hijacking" because some nasty spyware/adware has been installed on your computer. I have had this sort of thing happen before, sometimes completely disabling the browser.

A good resource can be found at the CastleCops forum:

http://www.castlecops.com

At that site, you can download a program called "HijackThis" - you can run the program and post a log to their online support forum:

http://www.castlecops.com/f67-Hijackthis_Spyware_Viruses_Worms_Trojans_Oh_My.html

The volunteer staff will then walk you through a process to remove offending programs. Because they are volunteers, it can take a few days to get results - but their advice tends to be good.

Just did (used disk cleanup utility). No joy.

A friend in Toronto reports that Google search is working just fine over there.
Also, I find I can't reach certain other Canadian websites, such as
www.nationalpost.com, while others are fine.

The problem seems to be selective. I'd love to hear from anyone who's having a
similar problem.
