This is not directly related to your question but there is a lot of talk in the literature about a generalized vulnerability to mental illness that takes different forms with different life experiences. These researchers argue that we might do better by conceptualizing mental illnesses as generalized syndromes with specific symptom profiles than the DSM's "distinct disorders" approach.
