The sleepiness comment assumed that SSRI's are generally not particularly
efficacious in anxiety or depression.

On 8 December 2006 Paul Okami wrote [snip]:
In the case of anxiety, my own impression (unlike the depression
stats, no back up data at my fingertips here) is that the best
that pharmacologists seem to have been able to offer is various
drugs that make you sleepy, something that many anxious people
look forward to.
Speaking anecdotally as someone who has experienced fairly severe episodes
of anxiety (which is generally not clearly delineated from symptoms of
depression), antidepressants I have been on in moderate doses have not
made me noticeably sleepy. (Not enough, at any rate, to distinguish
between any such effect and the tiredness associated with symptomatic
disturbed sleep.) And assuming that they are to any degree efficacious (as
I believe they have been in my case), the choice between sleepiness and
moderate to acute anxiety is a no brainer.
