Yes, thanks for the video from me, too. We're going through this with my
second grade son. He was pulling his hair out (ours too) when he had to do
subtraction of two digit numbers using the book's method: a 10 by 10 matrix
of numbers 1 - 100, and subtraction of, say, 57 - 30 involved finding 57 on
the chart, and moving up 3 rows (each row = 10). I assume 57 - 31 involves
moving two rows up and 1 extra jump to the left. I realize that addition and
subtraction can be coceptualized as movement along lines, but, you don't
need to fill your limited cognitive space with this idea every time you make
change at the store. Besides, "mastering" by rote some of the math has the
benefit of freeing cognitive space to deal with concepts (math or
otherwise).
