You shouldn't be so hard on banjos Ed. Consider acordians and bagpipes! :-)
In defense of bagpipes: In the right place the sound they make is wonderful. There are few breathtaking experiences as seeing a band of bagpipes, fully attired in in kilt, sporran, skien dhu, etc., playing Scottish airs and marching down a hill in the highlands. The sound of bagpipes can be quite intolerable if played in confined space: A place for everything and everything in its place! (Now here is a principle surely appropriate for teaching, and discussing its interesting origin.) The only exception is once a year, on the Rabbie Burns day, when they pipe in the haggis at a banquet.
