What do you mean by, "on purely logical grounds." If there were four
groups, the first two might differ from the last two (one possible
nonpairwise contrast), but this would not necessarily mean that a
pairwise comparison would be significant.

Dear Rick,
Because of the protection for Type I error, the largest and smallest
mean may indeed not differ with the post hoc test.
But I would argue that they MUST differ on purely logical grounds.
