Hi Natalie, At the moment, my department has two adjuncts working for us. They are both great and I will do my best to hang on to them. When they were hired, I checked their references and interviewed them. I did not observe their teaching at first, but did later, and I closely supervised syllabi construction (which I keep on file). We have had some odd ones in the past and in that case, we've had to endure as best as we could but they were not asked back. We are trying to develop a more systematic method of recruiting, but for now it has consisted of print ads, word-of-mouth, and walk-ins (those were the worst--I will NOT hire walk-ins anymore, even if they do look good on paper).
I doubt this helps, but it is what we are doing--I will be interested in others' responses. We too are trying to develop a more formal policy. Carol Carol L.
