I've been thinking more about this issue since my (I felt) rather smug response last week. I think many of us want to be so very nice and kind to our students that it's easy to leave the wrong impression. Relative to accepting gifts, OCC has a policy that instructors can't accept gifts worth over $10 but maybe we should just go with a no gifts at all policy. Or, as this post suggests, stating (right from the start) that the gift was very thoughtful but it will be given to the college in their name. Also, maybe we should rethink this "keep in touch" farewell and replace it with a wish that the student have a great academic future and let it go at that. The few students every semester that we truly do plan on keeping in contact for research or other academically related reasons (e.g., Psi Chi/Psi Beta) will know that before leaving the class.
