Michael-
It is a noble thought. But why can't one do what Diamond and McGaugh do AND
find their own way (and not impede others journey's). (I don't know McGaugh or
Diamond so I can't comment on their particular efforts). Personally, I find the
likelihood that one will fulfill their own (cross-cultural) journey through
life without recognizing their effects on other folks "good days" to be very
minimal indeed ("No one is an island" to paraphrase). It was once pointed out
to me by a true friend that I can sometimes be like a little kid who sees a
hornets nest and in the zeal to show it to others pokes it with a stick and
then says, "See!". They do, but it is more painful than necessary for all
involved! I hope you find what you are looking for.

I consider myself more like a public intellectual; pass the knowledge down to the public. Service is more attractive to me than scholarly recognition. To me Leo Buscaglia is more effective than McGaugh and Diamond (Physiological Psychologists) in their labs trying to determine physiological neuronal variables. To me knowledge should lead to effective social change. One of the penchants of the Eurocentric paradigm is thart knowledge can be the mran and the end in itself. I don't buy it.I am not on the planet to live up to expectations of other people.
