Hi

Just to confirm Stuart's point. I have a lecture slide showing average
measured personality scores separated by countries that perceive their
fellow citizens to be high or low on the various big 5 traits. The
average personality scores are generally quite close, contrary to the
self-stereotypes.

In the article, Mccrae's comments clearly correspond to the
self-perceptions, whereas other comments appear to be about actual
personality scores, which tend not to correspond to the stereotypes.

So I think the individual bits of information are probably correct
(again subject to the article being published, as Stuart states), but
the author appears to have missed a fundamental distinction in the
literature.

Take care
Jimj

Dear Tipsters,

As someone who has been a co-author on a recent paper on this topic (we
compared Anglophones and Francophones in Quebec), here is a comment.

1. The original article is not yet available so we cannot comment on
the accuracy of the story.
2. The subtitle implies that the research is about perception, but the
text seems to suggest it is about perception and about measured traits.

3. The text does not do a very good job of clearly separating these.
This is important because there is research showing that perceptions do
not usually match the results from measuring the traits.
4. I wonder what the effect sizes of any differences will be?

Sincerely,

Stuart
