Our dissertation defense had to be publically announced for a period (I
seem to remember it was 2 weeks, but I'm old now!). I still have a copy
of the announcement on the wall in my office (WHY???) It was open to the
public but as it was held in a classroom in the Psychology Building only
the committee and a few friends among the faculty and grad students
attended (the tradition was, as for Carol, that those who attended
adjourned to the local pub afterwards for discussion). I don't remember
much else as something seemed to interfere with memory consolidation.
(I did my defense at 1300 hours on July 13th- which was a Friday- my
wife did hers with the same committee, save one person, immediately
following mine so there was a slight delay till festivities). J

So was mine. I had mine in the Senate Chamber in the Old Capitol
Building at the University of Iowa. A bunch of tourists came through
during my defense. My husband was anxiously waiting so he put on his
sunglasses and joined the tourists.

Then we went and drank a lot.
