Dear colleagues:

You are right. In Argentina, al least in public universities, the defense
of the doctoral dissertation is public. More over it must also be public
the defense of the Master Thesis. But in fact, is like Tim said. Usually
only attend the defense the evaluating comittee, friends and relatives of
the doctoral student and some times other doctoral students who are close
to their own defenses.

Taking into account that, in the field of Psychology, most Faculty members
didn't obtain their doctoral degree, is also usual that a lot of people
attend the defense in the case that an "old" professor defend his/her
dissertation.

I guess it must be not easy to imagine in US or Canada, but in Argentina
some times professors older than 45 or 50 years old end their doctoral
diseertation. In such cases, a lot of public use to attend the PH D
dissertation.

Sincerely yours,

Hugo Klappenbach, PH D.
