Some more examples of the "Freudian" defence mechanism of "displacement".
First from a chapter by Anthony Trollope, the title of which speaks for
itself: "Why Puck, the Pony, Was Beaten". From *Framley Parsonage*
(published in 1860), chapter 21, in which Lucy Roberts expresses her
feelings about Lord Lufton and Griselda Grantly by beating the pony:

"Perhaps, considering my position, I ought to know nothing of Lord Lufton,
for you say that it is very dangerous for young ladies to know young
gentlemen. But I do know enough of him to understand that he ought not to
like such a girl as Griselda Grantly. He ought to know that she is a mere
automaton, cold, lifeless, spiritless, and even vapid. There is, I believe,
nothing in her mentally, whatever may be her moral excellences. To me she
is more absolutely like a statue than any other human being I ever saw. To
sit still and be admired is all that she desires; and if she cannot get
that, to sit still and not be admired would almost suffice for her. I do
not worship Lady Lufton as you do; but I think quite well enough of her to
wonder that she could choose such a girl as that for her son's wife. That
she does wish it I do not doubt. But I shall indeed be surprised if he
wishes it also.' And then as she finished her speech, Lucy again flogged
the pony. This she did in vexation, because she felt that the tell-tale
blood had suffused her face."

And, would you know, a little later Lucy acknowledges her feelings for Lord
Lufton: "I do like Lord Lufton very much; and I do dislike Griselda Grantly
almost as much. Therefore I shall not be satisfied if they become man and
wife."

Now a much earlier exposition of "Freudian" displacement activity, this
time from the 16th century, from Michel de Montaigne's essay "On Anger":

"Anger is a passion which delights in itself and fawns on itself. How
often, if we are all worked up for some wrong reason and then offered some
good defence or excuse, we are vexed against truth and innocence itself! I
can recall a marvellous example of this from Antiquity. Piso, a great man
in every other way, noted for his virtue, was moved to anger against one of
his soldiers. Because that soldier had returned alone after foraging and
could give no account of where he had left his comrade, Piso was convinced
that he had murdered him and at once condemned him to death. When he was
already on the gallows, along comes the lost comrade! At this the whole
army was overjoyed and, after many a hug and embrace between the two men,
the executioner brought both of them into the presence of Piso; all those
who were there were expecting that Piso himself would be delighted. Quite
the contrary: for, through embarrassment and vexation, his fury, which was
still very powerful. suddenly redoubled and, by a quibble which his passion
promptly furnished him with, he found three men guilty because one had just
been found innocent, and had all three of them executed: the first soldier
because he was already sentenced to death; the second, the one who had gone
missing, because he had caused the death of his comrade; the hangman for
failing to obey orders."
