Dawn -
One thing that I've found helpful is to require the students to do an early
paper using data collected from the class, for which I provide the
references and statistical analyses. I always have a major independent
project, and I feel that _all_ of the students' library work should be
directed at that project (they do have to put the references into APA
format, though). I also like to have them focus on the writing aspect for
the first paper, and not panic over the statistics (they can do that for
their own projects). I also have them revise that paper as many times as
necessary to make it right.
Having them all use the same study for the first paper eases the task of
assessment as well - you know what the product should look like without
having to refer to the specific results and references.
