I don't know of any undergraduate programs specialized to one topic of
psychology, and don't know if Health Psychology is the way to go if there
is one. My big question is what will this degree prepare them for? In my
mind it seems that it will prepare them to do less than a more generalized
undergrad program would. If they go on to graduate school, what areas will
they be prepared to go into? Would someone with a BA in Health Psychology
really be prepared for grad school in, say, IO or Social? And if they don't
go on to grad school, they would be just as well, if not better, served by
a general psych BA and an elective Health Psychology course. I guess a lot
would depend on the courses required of the program...
Perhaps I'm not seeing past my limited world, but a specialized Bachelors
degree just doesn't seem like a good idea to me. I'd love to hear of places
that are doing this and how well it works. In fact, I'd love to be able to
create a special undergraduate emphasis here in human factors in
conjunction with either computer science or computer information systems.
But I feel like such a program would really be exposing students to such a
limited area of psychology that it would do them a disservice later on...
also, our administration probably wouldn't approve of such a thing... but
maybe if I had examples of other places to use in support I could get it
done...
Just my thoughts...
