This thread makes me curious about the vocational-deficiency
hypothesis.According to the deficiency hypothesis, some people
may choose careers that reflect what may be lacking in
their personality types. For examples: doctors have a fear of
dying hence they choose to save lives; people go into Clinical
and Counseling fields because of their own unresolved personal
problems.
When I was in grad school at Mizzou, some of the research areas
of the Psychology profs were in direct contrast to their
personality. One prof research area was aggression, but he was
the calmest guy around. Another prof area was humor, but one
could hardly get a laugh from him.
I worked as an Addiction Counselor at a State Correctional
Institution and I was surprised at the amount of inmates
who wanted to be addiction counselors.I would bet that, given
no relapse, they could be experts in this field.
