Jim, find me that "statistically average witha plus or minus" person
walking around.  Statistics are great references, but not absolute
depictions of reality, especially when it comes to the individual.  Even
one of the heavies in your field said that when you come to that miracle
called the individual, put aside your charts.  Maybe too many
psychologists, who I thought were deeply concerned with the human
condition, haven't taken enough good history courses :-))  Of course,
then, many of us historians, our to proof that there is a scientific bent
to our profession, are going down that statistical tunnel of the
depersonalized "new history."
