I'm not sure that my comment about "the computational formulae" was
clear enough. I didn't mean to suggest that we don't have students do some
of the stats by hand. I meant that we have them do those stats using the
definitional formulae rather than those algebraically equivalent shortcut
formulae found in most if not all stats texts. As Marcia McKinley Pace put
it, "I would rather have them practice the definitional formulas, to
reinforce the theory".
