I think the operative word is not "can't" but "won't."
Dedicated media and education basher that I am (no apologies!) I think that
the generally passive mode our students have been in for 12+ years by the
time they get to us is completely detrimental to their engagement in the kind
of rigorous mental activity that a good university level education should
entail.
I don't think god will help us because god for many of our students is the
tube. We have to insist that they start actually using the equipment that
they have between their ears instead of flatlining except in the presence of
sensationalism and sales pitches. But it's a struggle for sure.
