        Did you ask him/her why, if graduating cum laude was important to
him/her, s/he didn't make the effort to earn a better grade in your class?
If not, try that one next time--it might wake the student up to the fact
that it is NOT your responsibility to "give" them a good grade, it's
his/her responsibility to EARN it.
